Anniversary
Swedish Institute on-line newsletter for our students, faculty and community.
For our 90th Anniversary observation, we honor those on our faculty and staff who have demonstrated
an extraordinary dedication to the Swedish Institute community by serving for over 25 years.
We salute them and say thank you!

Mr. Huey has been with the Swedish Institute for over 32 years, working in a variety of administrative
support positions since 1974. He currently holds the title of Dean for Administration and Operations.
Mr. Huey's responsibilities have been so varied that there are few graduates who do not know him.
He is shown here with Sid Zerinsky (now known as Hari Jot
Singh) who was director of the school from 1964 to 1984.
Lucy Liben, M.S., L.M.T.

Massage Therapy Program, a position she has held since 1998. Ms. Liben began working at the Swedish
Institute in 1978 as an instructor of Anatomy and Physiology, which she taught for 20 years. She has
been instrumental in envisioning and developing many advances both within the school and the massage
therapy profession.
Details are in her faculty bio.
The Phillips/Eckardt Family
Although Captain Theodore Melander founded the school, the Phillips/Eckardt family has been guiding the
Swedish Institute for nearly 80 years. Lillian F. Phillips, a 1926 alumna, began working at the school
in 1927 as an assistant to Capt. Melander. She subsequently became director when Capt. Melander retired.
Ms. Phillips’ nephew, Paul A. Eckardt, received a diploma from the school in 1936. His career path led
him to become chief of the Suffolk County Police Department; however, his wife, Patricia Eckardt, took
on the responsibility of president of the school in 1968.
She served in that capacity until 1992 and
then as Chairman of the Board of Directors until 1998. Two of her daughters then accepted the mantle of
stewardship, with Jean Eckardt becoming Director of Admissions and Paula J. Eckardt serving as President.
Although Jean Eckardt has retired, Paula Eckardt is currently the President of the Swedish Institute.
Jill Thompson, M. Div., L.M.T.
Jill Thompson has taught at the Swedish Institute for 28 years, since 1978. Her classes have included
Swedish Massage I, Anatomy and Physiology II, Neurology, Pathology and all Professional Development
classes. She is currently Director of Academic Support Services for the Massage Therapy Program. Ms.
Thompson's unique background in divinity studies lent her private practice a special focus on the
integration of bodywork with psychotherapy and meditative techniques.
