Professional Continuing Education for Personal Trainers and Exercise InstructorsFocus on Flexibility II: The Trunk Post-Rehab, Older Adult and Flexibility Training Workshops These intensive and detailed workshops are a must for fitness professionals working with post-rehab clients and older adults, or designing flexibility programs to complement strength and cardiovascular training. A biomechanical perspective serves as the basis for flexibility testing and prescription to create balanced bodies that can stand up to the stresses of repetitive exercise. Saturday’s workshops explore the biomechanics, testing, stretching, injuries and training of the spine. Sunday’s workshops adapt these concepts to training older adults, incorporating self-myofascial release, and building spinal stability with balls, bands and balance apparatus. Date: Saturday, April 8 and Sunday, April 9 Tuition: $36 per workshop Package: $250.00 for all 8 classes Note: If registering for all 8 classes use class code (P-009) Instructor:Vincent Metzo, M.S., L.M.T., C.S.C.S. Open to Swedish Institute graduates, L.M.T.s, personal trainers, and other health and allied health professionals. The Flexibility II Workshop information can also be viewed in our current Continuing Education catalog, which lists classes for all programs. (Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader.)
Saturday Schedule(P-001) Functional Anatomy and Exercise Biomechanics of the Trunk and Core Common injuries of the spine, their pathogenesis and
predisposing anatomical and postural factors will be covered
to give the fitness professional a basis for understanding
pre and post-rehabilitation exercise programming.
(P-002) Flexibility and Functional Testing of the Trunk Observation of posture, scanning assessments for muscle
shortness, and specific muscle length tests will be
demonstrated and practiced to assess range of motion of
client’s core musculature. This intensive practical
workshop teaches the tools you need to quickly and
effectively spot postural distortion patterns that can lead
to injury of the spine.
(P-003) Assisted Stretching of the Trunk Effective body mechanics, hand placement and efficient
positioning are necessary for anyone stretching clients at
the end of a workout. Advanced PNF techniques for the core
musculature will be presented in addition to stretching
guidelines for clients with low back injuries and
conditions.
(P-004) Post-Rehab Exercise Guidelines for Back Injuries and Conditions Progressions, including stabilization, strength, balance,
functional, agility and power, any client.
Sunday Schedule(P-005) Self-Myofascial Release Help normalize nervous system function, recover between
workouts, and disinhibit muscles to promote balanced posture
and efficient biomechanics. Self-myofascial release with
foam-rollers and other tools can take flexibility programs
to the next level. Nerve endangerment sites and safe body
mechanics will be stressed to get the most from this useful
technique.
(P-006) Training Older Adults Cardiovascular, strength and flexibility guidelines for
older adult exercise will be presented. Adapting exercise
recommendations to older adults with specific
musculoskeletal and metabolic conditions such as arthritis
and diabetes will be examined. Normal range of motion and
modifications to exercise testing for older adults will also
be discussed.
(P-007) Core Stabilization with Balls, Bands and Balance Apparatus A wide variety of exercises progressing from stable to
unstable surfaces and from post-rehab through athletic
enhancement will be shown. Proper progression through
varying levels of challenge and injury modifications will be
discussed. Safety and proper technique including kinetic
chain alignment will be stressed. (P-008) Training Clients with Neurological Conditions The pathogenesis of neurological conditions such as
Parkinson’s disease, polio, and multiple sclerosis will be
presented. The presentation includes symptom-specific
guidelines and teaching techniques to aid personal trainers
in safely developing programs for this population.
This is a hands-on class. Students need to bring one sheet. Wear loose comfortable clothing.
Each of the above workshops is approved for 0.2 CEUs by the following national exercise organizations:
