NewsPersonal Training students get hands-on experience A steady stream of people of different ages, body types and levels of fitness came to the second floor studio of Chelsea Recreation Center on West 25th Street to take advantage of free evaluations provided by students from the Personal Training Program. As with other regularly-held Offsites, this experience gives students an opportunity to apply the skills they are learning outside of the classroom, while under the watchful eyes of their instructors. Program dean Vincent Metzo and instructor Denise Lowe were both on hand throughout the two days, supervising students as they worked with their clients. “The students are often apprehensive before an Offsite event,” said Denise. “But the transformation that occurs in just four hours is amazing. While before they may have lacked confidence in their abilities and were uncertain about working in a different environment, once they go through the hands-on experience they are really excited. They gain so much confidence that we made participation in the fitness fairs a mandatory part of the program.” Students make recommendations based on their evaluation of participants. They are invited to return to the following semester’s fitness fair, when a new group of students will help them determine what kind of progress they’ve made. |
