Clinical ExperienceStudents begin their practice of massage therapy by working on one another in class. As students build their skills, they start to work on the general public at the P. H. Ling Massage Therapy Clinic under the supervision of experienced faculty. Students work first in the Stress Reduction Clinic, where they provide Swedish massage and Shiatsu sessions which focus on relieving tension and providing an overall feeling of general well-being.
In later semesters, students work in the Therapeutic Massage Clinic, which calls for more advanced knowledge. Using skills they have gained in various assessment classes, students create treatment strategies for addressing their clients' particular physical issues. Students monitor their clients' progress over a fifteen-week period as they provide Western, and then Eastern, therapeutic massage treatments. Offsite ClinicsIn addition to clinics at school, students participate in Offsite Internships which allow them to take their developing skills into the community. The Offsite Clinics are generally one-time events held at various locations around the city. Under the supervision of experienced faculty members, students work for several hours in small groups, offering massage therapy free of charge to generally underserved populations or to specialized populations. Our list of over 20 different Offsite locations has included: Mt. Sinai Hospital Parents of children at Ronald McDonald House Senior Citizens at the Penn South Program for Seniors Alzheimer's patients at Cobble Hill Health Center Radiology patients at Hospital for Special Surgery Runners in the New York City Marathon Participants in MS Bike Tour See our school newsletter, the Sinews, Vol.1, No. 2, pages 8 and 9, for an article on our Offsite Clinics.
